JDS wants blood test for Overeem
MANILA, Philippines – Reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight king Junior Dos Santos said Alistair Overeem should submit himself to blood testing first before asking for a heavyweight title shot.
Dos Santos, who recently defended his title against Frank Mir, said he has no problem defending his title against a drug free Overeem.
"I would like him to do a test -- a blood test," Dos Santos said in ESPN. "I think we both need to do that. I want a clean fight and he needs to prove he is not under any kind of substances."
The 263-pound behemoth was supposed to challenge Dos Santos for the heavyweight title last May but tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone.
Overeem blamed the result to an anti-inflammatory drug which was used to treat his rib injury.
Dos Santos, however, refused to buy Overeem’s excuse.
"Using drugs is completely unnecessary, and I am the living proof," he said. "I’m the champion, and I never used any kind of forbidden substances. Fighting a guy that uses these kinds of drugs is completely unfair and useless. With or without any kind of authorization [for using testosterone], the fighter who uses those substances is never fighting with his own skills. He is enhancing his power with those drugs."
Dos Santos added that even if Overeem tests negative in future drug tests, the latter would have to go through another bout before being awarded a title shot.
"I think he doesn’t deserve a title shot right now. ... Overeem needs to have another fight before having a title shot."
